If you are like me, someone who grew up in the 80s and early 90s, there is probably a shelf somewhere in your parents’ house that is bent by the weight of old photo albums. These photos document everything: births, weddings, vacations, birthdays, anniversaries, get-togethers and so on. Sometimes it’s just a handful of albums and maybe a box full of photos, for others we’re talking shelves of albums that are categorized and labeled.

This has become more and more prevalent when digital cameras came out. The ease of taking pictures coupled with the increasing amount of pictures a camera can take has conversely increased the amount of pictures a person has in their personal collection.

So now we have a problem, what do we do with these photos? We can go the traditional route and print them out and stick them in albums. This isn’t what I would choose. For one thing, my mind weeps at the number of trees that will be killed to provide enough paper not only to print the photos but to make the albums as well. There’s also the problem of finding room to store the albums. Not to mention the fact that if you want to share these photos, you’ll have to either invite people to your home or cart it around with you. Then there’s the problem of sorting through them to find the photo you want, which can be problematic unless you go out of your way of labeling them and creating some sort of reference, which is great if you’ve been trained in the Dewey Decimal System.

Don’t get me wrong, printing photos is not necessarily something that has passed its time. However, if you just want to store and share your photos, there’s nothing better than going digital.

There’s two ways of going about this. You can sign up to an existing photo-sharing website like Flickr or Facebook. This has its benefits, you don’t have to create anything, just upload your photos and you’re done. You can even tag your photos to make it easy to find them later on. The only problem is privacy, however these sites do have privacy settings so you can control who gets to see what.

The other option is making your own website. While this means you actually have to learn how to build a website, you do get to choose how you want to lay everything out and you have total control on who has access to what. It depends on how much work you want to put into it. There are several options,
